Streets of Doha: Between the Future and the Past

Panel Brief

Doha is an architectural arena where modernism meets tradition, mirroring the society in which it is built. Despite the very rapid changes over the last half century, including the rapid expansion of modern Doha around its old core since the 1950s, and the emergence of the high rise district of West Bay since the 2000s, the ancient traditions of the region have been retained in surviving districts of vernacular architecture, and in the architectural language of new generations of architects who have been inspired by the past. This panel will discuss the influence of traditional Qatari architecture on the urban fabric of Doha today, and explore how it will continue to shape the future of the city.

The special guest speakers will be:

Chair: Prof. Robert Carter, Professor of Arabian & Middle Eastern Archaeology, UCL Qatar
