This project explores identity using our clothing choices as a starting point, it includes an installation/exhibition, a film, schools’ workshop and a panel discussion.
A 10-minute film, ‘We are our choices’, will feature people from different communities living in Qatar. Through the seemingly straightforward observation of what they wear, the film explores deeper issues of identity, choices, and aspirations, making us think more deeply about our identities and value systems as reflected by our clothing choices. There will be print and online materials which contextualise the film.
An exhibition with a focus on the abaya, a traditional loose-fitting garment, exploring its role as a symbol of modesty and cultural identity. It will showcase future-oriented textiles and interpretations, including abayas personalised by women from the UK and Qatar and garments made from recycled textiles "Cut from the Same Cloth" abaya, other featured pieces include an abaya made from Liberty print silk and an innovative 'nano' sport abaya.
