As part of the Qatar UK Year of Culture 2013, and in response to Qatar’s national vision 2030, the British Council organised Women in Science, an event at Qatar University bringing together top female scientists and science policy makers from Qatar and the UK to celebrate the importance of science in their lives.
Following the opening speech by president of Qatar University, Professor Dr Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad, an interactive panel of four distinguished female speakers reflected on the opportunities scientific study had upon their lives. The discussions explored how careers in science enable women to contribute to solving some of the world’s most urgent challenges. They offered motivation and celebrated the achievements of female scientists around the world.
The panel speakers were Professor Ilham Al-Qaradawi, Professor of Physics and Dr. Asma Al-thani, Head of the Health Sciences Department, both from Qatar University. They were joined by Dr Sophie Laurie, Head of International from Research Councils UK, and Clare Harris, Vice President for Gas Development and General Manager of Qatar Shell Upstream International.
